There does appear to be an infection and it would be a good idea to see a doctor straightaway. The water should go through the nasal passages if you are following instructions, nasal irrigation will help clear the nasal passages and help the inflammation, also regular use will help you maintain a healthy nasal environment. It will not fight the present infection, however, that may need medication. Hope this helps, take care.

I've had some kind of sinus condition for the past 10 days--severely swollen nasal passages, dark yellow mucus, ear pain and pressure, and headache. I have tried and tried to use the neti pot but the water will not go through, it either backs up in to my mouth or just stays in the pot. Could this be a bacterial infection? If so, can a neti pot help with that? At what point is it wise to see a doctor?

Have you ever tried the Navage Nasal Hygiene System? It seems to be a modern version of the neti pot.

My head feels very "stuffed-up" and my hearing impaired due to what ever is going on in there. I also have a lot of drainage at the back of my throat. Is it safe to use the netti pot under these conditions?
I am a diabetic.

Thank you so much for any help or advice given.

I have suffered allergic rhinitis since my childhood and never really have been able to breathe through my nose, In that time I had surgery regarding the problem but it wasn´t helpful. So now I hear of the Neti and just Bought one, the problem is that one of my nostrils is very blocked, which is my usual condition and the other one aint much of an open one. The blockage is to much so the water doesnt run through the other nostril, and I feel it is not of mucus build up but of inflammation, can you help me please?

hi KLW,
Use of the netti pot will remove mucous from your nasal pathways and help prevent infection. You probably have inflamation and narrowed nasal passages because of the allergy which is causing difficulties in breathing, this will settle down once your allergic reaction is under control. Continued use of the netti pot will prevent the build up of mucous and give your body a chance to cope with the allergy. In the long term, use of the netti pot will help you maintain healthy nasal pathways and your body will be able to better deal with allergies, giving you a much better management of your condition.

I have allergies in the spring - always ending up with my nose plugged and having to breathe with my mouth open at night. I used the neti-pot last night and my congestion got worse! Maybe it's because I had 2 glasses of wine after I used it. I put warm water and less than 1/4 tsp in the pot. I used it again this afternoon and it's getting worse. I'm completely off wine now thinking this may be contributing to it. I took a Daytime Sudafed and it didn't seem to touch it. So an hour later I sprayed just a wee bit of Astelin in each nostril(a prescription that I would like to get off of) and that didn't work either. I absolutley cannot breathe through my nose. What am I doing wrong? Can someone help?

One should use the netti pot as often as one needs it. It can be used at the slightest hint of trouble and continued until one is well. If one's sinuses are blocked when one starts on the netti pot, a lot of mucous, some quite old, will come out. In due course things will clear up and the body will get a chance to heal itself and the need for the procedure may well diminish or disappear. There are many, especially in India and South Asia who use it everyday as part of their lives. It helps to keep the nasal pathways clean and germ free. I personally do not think it is necessary to use this when one is well and has no symptoms. I hope this answer is satisfactory, do let me know if you require information in more specific terms. I will try and find an answer.

It is most comfortable when the salt concentration is similar to the concentration in the body fluids. Salt tends to absorb moisture. Since there is some salt content in the tissues, rinsing with water that has lower salt content than the body can increase the swelling in the sinuses because the salt in the tissues will absorb the plain water rinse. This is what causes the discomfort.
