In a Neti Pot / Netti Pot filled with warm water about 1/4 teaspoonful is enough, it should taste as salty as tears do. Too little or too much and you will feel discomfort. It stings.

The right amount and you will hardly feel anything at all.

Over time your body adjusts and you will know exactly how much is right for you.

However, this amount is sometimes increased to get other benefits like absorbing excess fluids from swollen parts of the nasal passages. This is part of advanced neti techniques and is best done under guidance of experienced yoga practitioners.

It is most comfortable when the salt concentration is similar to the concentration in the body fluids. Salt tends to absorb moisture. Since there is some salt content in the tissues, rinsing with water that has lower salt content than the body can increase the swelling in the sinuses because the salt in the tissues will absorb the plain water rinse. This is what causes the discomfort.
